Six months before his scheduled release, Leone, a model prisoner, is abruptly dragged from his bed in a minimum-security prison and transferred to Gateway, a maximum-security facility run by Warden Drumgoole. This maximum-security "hellhole" is where the warden intends to keep Leone for the rest of his life, having pulled every string to have him placed under his control.

Previously, Leone had been one of Drumgoole's "charges" at another facility until he escaped to be at his foster father's deathbed. Drumgoole's harsh treatment, which forced Leone to break out just two weeks before his release, prompted a newspaper report that accused the warden of brutality. As a result, Drumgoole was publicly humiliated and transferred to Gateway, the worst prison in the system, while Leone was sentenced to additional time.

Now, it is Drumgoole's turn to seek revenge. His plan is to physically and psychologically intimidate Leone until he lashes out. When he does, Drumgoole will extend Leone's prison sentence in this "hell" of a facility... or possibly even go as far as to kill him.
